The best example of a fast growing
freshwater species would be the Barramundi. With its high production
rate, the Barramundi shows a typical pattern of development.
Barramundi is a steadily growing and clean and green industry.
Their popularity grows because of its diverse use, for example,
all parts of the fish can be used as food, leather, or clothing.
Barramundi is a tropical species not native to NSW. However,
it is currently being farmed in all mainland states of Australia
and fish is available all year round. Over 800 tonnes per
year are produced, however, within 5 years the farmed Barramundi
industry will probably be producing about 3000-4000 tonnes
of fish per annum.

This native fresh water fish is an
excellent species for culture in earthen ponds or fabricated
tanks. Silver perch is now totally protected in the wild. As
they are fast growing and readily take processed palletized
feed, they can be heavily stocked, provided that farm management
practices are of a high standard. The silver perch is a premium
quality fish with a mild flavour, moist fine white flesh with
few bones and has a high meat recovery.
Silver perch has the potential to form the basis of a large
industry, and therefore replace some of the 57,000 tonnes of
fresh or frozen fish imported into Australia annually. NSW
is the main area of production, but we can also see growth
in smaller quantities in QLD and WA. Most of the Silver Perch
are sold in Sydney and mainly among the Asian communities.
